Talks on climate activism in Uganda
Lessons of courage
Youth climate activists in Uganda are facing a more and more extreme level of repression in their country. They experienced a heightened level of arrest, threats and intimidation and prolonged time in prison for doing peaceful protests on the street. Especially people engaged in the discussion on oil and gas are targeted. Due to the harsh treatment of climate activists, most activists engaged in this type of activism face severe economic, social and health related issues. Despite all of this, the students’ movements (Students Against EACOP and XR Justice Movement Uganda) have been some of the most active youth climate groups on the streets to stop the oil project EACOP (East African Crude Oil Pipeline) in Uganda. In this talk they would like to share their stories and experiences to a broader international audience.
Starting with a Danish audience they have partnered up with Danish activists to do online talks on how it is to fight and live in one of the most dangerous countries for climate activists.
The talks are arranged to create awareness of the ongoing and difficult battle against oil in Uganda, to inspire and to generate revenue for the movements to continue their fight against EACOP and oil and gas projects in Uganda.
Generic composition of the talks in Denmark:
